Get to know us – LCA CARE: Supporting SMEs in the Transition to a Sustainable Agri-Food Sector
The LCA CARE project aims to drive sustainability and eco-innovation in the agri-food sector by equipping small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with the tools needed to assess and enhance the environmental impact of their products.
Coordinated by Lisbon’s Higher Institute of Education and Science (ISEC), LCA CARE brings together 13 partners from Portugal, Lithuania, Spain, Bulgaria, and Germany. With a total budget of €1.8 million, the project is focused on developing a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tool specifically designed for SMEs, enabling them to make data-driven decisions and improve their sustainability performance.
Objectives and Key Actions
The project is structured around three core areas:
- Development of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Tool: The tool will provide SMEs with a structured and accessible approach to assess and improve the environmental footprint of their products.
- Training and Capacity Building: The project will offer a postgraduate course for SME managers and specialized training on critical analysis of LCA results, equipping companies with the skills to integrate sustainability into their business strategies.
- Stakeholder Engagement and Knowledge Sharing: LCA CARE will organize national and international events, including workshops, conferences, and awareness-raising activities, to promote dialogue on sustainability and eco-innovation in the agri-food sector.
Commitment to a More Sustainable Future
Aligned with the Regional and National Strategies for Smart Specialisation (RIS3) and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030, LCA CARE contributes to a more environmentally responsible and resource-efficient agri-food industry. By providing SMEs with the necessary tools and knowledge, the project supports their transition towards sustainable production models, ensuring a positive impact on both business competitiveness and environmental performance.
